Gas Line Replacement Services
Homeowners or property managers may want to replace gas lines due to:
- Age: Gas lines, especially those made from black iron pipe, can deteriorate over time. The typical lifespan of a black iron gas line is generally 20 to 30 years. Rust and corrosion can weaken the pipe, increasing the risk of leaks.
- Damage: Physical damage to the gas line caused by digging, foundation settling, or accidental impact can compromise the integrity and require replacement.
- Leaks: If you suspect a leak, such as smelling rotten eggs or hearing a hissing sound, take action immediately. Find the shut-off valve or call your gas company to shut off the gas. Then, call for professional gas leak repair services.
- Upsizing: If you are planning to upgrade gas appliances with higher BTU ratings, your existing gas line may not be able to handle the increased gas flow. In this case, you would need to install larger gas lines.
- Safety Upgrades: Building codes and safety regulations for gas lines have evolved over time as we’ve learned more about their safe management. Older gas lines may not meet current safety standards and require replacement to meet the necessary code requirements.
Dauenhauer offers expert gas line replacement services in Louisville and Lexington, Kentucky. We’ll replace old gas lines with new ones that meet all the best practices and safety standards.

Gas Line Installation & Replacement FAQs
What should I do if I smell natural gas?
PHMSA and every US gas utility publish the same script: (1) DO NOT operate any electrical switch, door bell, phone, lighter or garage door opener — a spark can ignite the gas; (2) leave the building immediately, do not stop to gather belongings, open doors as you exit; (3) from a safe distance outside, call your gas utility’s emergency line OR 911 — both numbers are free 24/7 and they prefer a false alarm over a real one; (4) do not re-enter until the utility technician says it’s safe.
What is the life expectancy of a gas line?
Varies wildly by material. Black iron (schedule 40 steel, the traditional standard) — 75–100+ years if protected from corrosion, but underground runs that lack cathodic protection can fail at 25–40 years. CSST (corrugated stainless steel tubing, the yellow flexible stuff in most modern homes) — 50+ years, but the early 1990s–2005 product has a documented vulnerability to lightning strike. Copper (used historically for some appliance drops) — 40+ years but now banned for natural gas in most jurisdictions. PE (polyethylene, used for buried yard lines only) — 50+ years. Catastrophic early failure is almost always a corrosion or installation error, not age.
Who is responsible for gas line repair — me or the utility?
Standard US rule: the gas utility owns the gas main in the street and the service line to the meter at your house — including the riser. The homeowner owns the gas piping from the meter outlet onward, both inside the house and any buried yard line to outdoor appliances (grill, pool heater, generator). Leak on the utility’s side of the meter — call the utility’s emergency line. Leak on the homeowner side — licensed plumber or gas fitter (most states require a gas endorsement separate from a basic plumbing license). If in doubt, call the utility first — they’ll come free, shut off at the meter, and tell you which side the leak is on.
How long does it take to fix a gas line?
Simple fitting-level leak repairs — 1–2 hours plus the permit and test. A full section replacement indoors — 4–6 hours. A buried yard line repair — often a full day, including excavation, pipe replacement, pressure test, inspection, and backfill. Re-routing an inside gas line (moving a stove or relocating a water heater) — typically 3–6 hours. The work itself is fast; what stretches the calendar is the permit cycle (same-day in most jurisdictions for a simple repair, 2–5 days if inspection scheduling is slow) and the mandatory pressure test that must be witnessed by the AHJ before the line is re-energized.
