How does a heat pump work?

A heat pump is a refrigerant-based system that moves heat rather than generating it. In heating mode, the outdoor coil absorbs heat from the outside air (even cold air has plenty of thermal energy), the compressor raises that heat to a higher temperature, and the indoor coil releases it into the house. In cooling mode, a reversing valve flips the cycle and the system works like an air conditioner. Because the system transfers heat instead of burning fuel, efficiencies of 200–400% are typical — every 1 kWh of electricity delivers 2–4 kWh of heat. That ratio is measured as COP in heating and SEER2/EER2 in cooling.

Will a heat pump work in cold weather?

Yes, with the right equipment. Standard heat pumps lose capacity as the outdoor temperature drops, and below roughly 25–30°F many use supplemental electric resistance heat. Cold-climate heat pumps (CCHPs) — certified under the DOE/ENERGY STAR Cold Climate Challenge — are tested to maintain a COP of at least 1.75 down to 5°F, and variable-speed models with enhanced vapor injection (EVI) can hold 100% heating capacity at -5°F. What is the lifespan of a heat pump?

Why is my electric bill so high with a heat pump?
