Electrical Installation FAQs

Do I need a permit for electrical work?

Yes, for any work beyond a like-for-like device swap in nearly every U.S. jurisdiction. A permit is required for: new circuits, service/panel upgrades, EV chargers, generators, rewires, outdoor wiring, hot tubs/pools and additions. Permits are typically $75–$300 in Louisville, and the follow-up inspection is where the work is validated against the current NEC. Un-permitted work is the single most common reason an insurance claim gets denied — keep the permit closed out and the stamped card on file.

How many outlets am I required to have in a room? (the “6-foot rule”)

NEC 210.52(A) — the 6-foot rule — requires that in any dwelling-unit wall space 2 ft or wider, no point along the floor line is more than 6 ft from a receptacle. Imagine a 6-ft lamp cord reaching the nearest outlet from anywhere in the room; that’s the test. Kitchen countertops are stricter under 210.52(C): no point along the counter can be more than 24 in from a receptacle (so outlets are required every 48 in), and any countertop 12 in or wider must have one. Bathrooms require at least one receptacle within 36 in of each basin, and it must be GFCI-protected.

What is the basic electrical maintenance a homeowner should do?

Monthly: test every GFCI and AFCI device by pressing TEST then RESET. Every 6 months: test smoke and CO alarms and vacuum dust off panel/register covers. Annually: visually inspect the main panel for rust, scorch marks or buzzing; check outdoor receptacle covers and weatherproofing; exercise the generator (if applicable); and confirm the main disconnect operates smoothly. Every 3–5 years: a professional electrical inspection. Never store anything within 36 in of the main panel (NEC 110.26 working-clearance rule).

What fixtures or appliances need their own dedicated circuit?

Under current NEC: the refrigerator (best practice 20A dedicated), microwave (20A dedicated), dishwasher and disposal (often on a dedicated 20A each, sometimes shared with local code), range/oven (40–50A 240V), dryer (30A 240V), washing machine (20A dedicated per 210.11(C)(2)), bathroom receptacle circuit (20A dedicated per 210.11(C)(3)), sump pump, hot tub/spa, HVAC air handler and condenser, tankless electric water heater, and any EV charger. Sharing these circuits is the #1 cause of nuisance breaker tripping.
