Tankless water heaters are a popular home investment because of their endless hot water, energy efficiency, and space-saving benefits.

What is a Tankless Water Heater?

Tankless water heaters, also known as on-demand water heaters, offer many advantages over traditional water heaters. They can supply endless hot water by heating it on demand rather than storing it in a tank. They are also space-saving and tend to have a longer lifespan.

Tankless water heaters also only use energy when you need hot water. Therefore, they are more energy efficient. Tankless water heaters can save a family of four $95 per year, or $1,800 over their lifetime.

Tankless Water Heater Repair & Maintenance

While tankless water heaters are durable, they still require regular maintenance to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Dauenhauer’s skilled plumbing professionals can handle a variety of tankless water heater repairs and maintenance needs, including:

  • Leaking: Leaks can occur around the unit’s connections or from the heat exchanger.
  • Reduced Hot Water Output: This is usually due to sediment buildup, but it can also be due to faulty igniters or low water pressure.
  • Error Codes: Many tankless heaters have diagnostic features that displace error codes. Our technicians can interpret these codes and identify the problem.
  • Annual Maintenance: Regular flushing of the unit helps prevent scale buildup and ensures efficient operation.

Tankless Water Heater FAQs

What are the pros and cons of a tankless water heater?

PROS — tankless units last 15–20 years (vs. 8–12 for a tank); they’re 8–34% more efficient on the same gallons of hot water (DOE); they save floor space (roughly the size of a carry-on suitcase, wall-mounted); they deliver endless hot water at or below the rated GPM; and they qualify for ENERGY STAR / utility rebates. CONS — 2–3× the upfront cost of a tank; flow rate is capped (a 9 GPM unit can’t run two full showers + dishwasher at once); most need a gas line upsized to 3/4″ and a Category III stainless vent; electric models need a dedicated 120–200 A electrical feed that most homes don’t have. If gas is available, gas tankless is usually the right choice.

Can you run two showers with a tankless water heater?

Depends on the GPM rating and your water temperature. Standard showers run 2.0–2.5 GPM at full flow (Repipe Solutions Inc.); two showers together = 4–5 GPM minimum. Rinnai and Navien size their residential whole-home tankless at 9–11 GPM — that’s enough for two showers plus a kitchen faucet in warm-groundwater regions (Florida, Texas, Southern California where incoming water is 65–75°F). In cold groundwater regions (Upper Midwest, New England where incoming water drops to 40–45°F in winter), the same unit may only deliver 6–7 GPM because more heat is required per gallon. For a large family or multi-bathroom simultaneous use, spec a 11+ GPM unit or a pair of smaller units in parallel.

Why do some plumbers not recommend tankless water heaters?

A few reasons they cite: (1) electric tankless won’t work during a power outage — and most gas tankless still need power for the igniter and electronics, so they also don’t work without electricity; (2) if descaling maintenance isn’t done annually, hard-water scale destroys the heat exchanger and voids warranty at year 5–7; (3) installed cost recovers over 10–15 years on energy savings, so if a homeowner plans to move soon, the ROI doesn’t land; (4) for homes that run hot water in short bursts all day (big family, laundry-heavy), tank efficiency isn’t actually that much worse than tankless in practice. Informed buyers love them — buyers who weren’t warned about maintenance regret them.
