6 Reasons Why You Need to Schedule Air Conditioner Cleaning Today

The weather is heating up, so if you haven’t already scheduled air conditioner cleaning, now is the time to do so!

The weather is heating up, so if you haven’t already scheduled air conditioner cleaning, now is the time to do so! As we get into full-blown summer, our air conditioners will need to work harder to keep our homes cool, and that’s when you’ll really start to notice the difference in how well you’ve maintained your air conditioner. Fortunately, it’s not too late to reap the benefits of an annual air conditioner cleaning. Here are 6 reasons why you need to call and schedule AC cleaning today!
1. Scheduling is easier early in the season. Once summer ramps up into full heat and our air conditioners are working their hardest, poorly maintained air conditioners start going on the fritz and small problems become big ones. As we start to get a lot of calls for repair and replacement, our technicians’ schedules fill up, making it more difficult to schedule an appointment with a quick turnaround. Scheduling for cleaning now will get you in before the rush.
2. You’ll catch problems while they’re still small. While you have a technician out to clean your air conditioning unit, he’ll also run and test the air conditioner to make sure it’s working properly. This is important because an expert may see problems developing that weren’t obvious to you yet. Fixing problems in these early stages helps you out because it saves you time and money on repairs. For instance, replacing a buzzing fan capacitor right away may save your fan motor from burning out and needing to be replaced as well.
3. The air conditioner won’t have to work as hard. Air conditioning cools your house via heat transfer, using the outdoor unit to release heat from your home to the outside air. The dirt and debris that builds up in the outdoor unit’s coils and fins prevent heat from transferring efficiently to the outside air, making the air conditioner have to run more frequently to cool your home. Having your air conditioner cleaned will restore it to peak efficiency so that it can cool your house more quickly and run less often.
4. The air conditioner will last longer. Just like with your car, regular maintenance can help your air conditioner last longer. A dirty air conditioner has to run more frequently and work harder to do the same job, which puts a lot of stress on the system. If it’s working harder to compensate for repairs that need to be made, that will take even more of a toll. A well-maintained air conditioner, on the other hand, will do its job easily and efficiently and can last many years longer than the average system.
5. Your house will stay more comfortable. Perhaps one of the best benefits of air conditioner cleaning is that your air conditioner will cool more efficiently. Clean coils and fins enable better airflow and more efficient heat transfer to the outdoor air, enabling the refrigerant to return to its liquid state before it goes back inside. Starting fresh every time means that the heat is transferred more effectively and the air your AC unit blows is colder, keeping you more comfortable inside.
6. You’ll save money. Air conditioner cleaning might come at a small price but think of it as an investment that can actually save you money in the long run. An AC unit that is clean and in good repair is more efficient and doesn’t have to work as hard or run as often, which can add up to substantial energy savings for you. In addition, you’ll save money on fewer catastrophic and emergency repairs, and ultimately, get more years out of your system before needing to replace it.
You have a lot riding on the operation of your AC unit; not just your own comfort, but also the investment your home represents. With over 64 years of experience and a team of licensed, professional technicians, Dauenhauer is the best way to protect that investment. Call us today to schedule your air conditioner cleaning, and we’ll take care of the rest.

What to Do When Your Shut-off valve Breaks

What to Do When Your Shut-off valve Breaks

A shut-off valve is meant to save your neck in case of an emergency, such as if a pipe bursts or a fixture starts leaking.

Water can pour pretty quickly into your home if that happens, so a shut-off valve, if used in time, can prevent a lot of water damage. If it doesn’t work, however, everything can go wrong pretty quickly. Here’s everything you need to know about shut-off valves, and what to do if yours doesn’t work.

What Is a Shut-off valve?

When most people hear the words shut-off valve, they think of the main one, which stops the water coming into your home. This is your go-to defense against pretty much any plumbing catastrophe, and should always be kept in good working order. Whether you have a leaking pipe, a broken shower knob, a busted water heater, or almost any other emergency you can think of, your shut-off valve is what will save you from endless water damage.

Besides the main shut off, you also typically have shut-off valves at every toilet, faucet, and appliance in your home. These shut-off valves are perfect for any situation involving very localized issues. If you have a leaking dishwasher, broken faucet knob, or a toilet that won’t stop running, for instance, this small shut-off valve will stop water flow to just that location while preserving water to the rest of the house.

Either way, any shut-off valve can mean the difference between a minor plumbing fix and major water damage, so it’s important to check these regularly to make sure they work properly.

Types of Shut-off valves

The smaller shut-off valves are typically just a small metal handle you twist to close the valve and shut off water flow. You can easily find an example of one next to your toilet. The main shut-off valve, on the other hand, is usually a ball valve, identifiable by a large lever or handle, often red in color, that runs perpendicular to the pipe when open. To close it, you’ll turn it a quarter turn until it goes the same direction as the pipe. Some older homes will have a gate valve, which will have a small metal wheel, also usually red, which you turn to close the valve. If your home has a gate valve as the main shut off, be careful, as these can break easily. It’s best to have it replaced with a modern ball valve as soon as possible.

What to Do with a Non-Working Valve

But what should you do if your valve breaks? The answer depends upon what the valve is actually doing. If it’s leaking, for instance, you could try grabbing a pair of pliers and tightening it up. If it’s stuck, you can try spraying it with WD-40 and letting it sit for a while before trying again, in the hopes that the oil will loosen up whatever is stuck.

If the valve is only partially closing, or if you can’t get it unstuck or to stop leaking, you’ll need to call a plumber to determine whether the valve needs to be replaced. A shut-off valve that doesn’t close all way can’t do its job in an emergency and is liable to leave you with a house full of water.

It can’t be stressed enough how important it is to check your shut-off valves occasionally! Finding out one isn’t working in a non-emergency situation is much less stressful and gives you time to get it fixed during normal business hours. Finding out it doesn’t work when you need it most is going to make a bigger problem out of something that could have been little more than an inconvenience.

Next Steps

If you’ve found a shut-off valve that isn’t working, call Dauenhauer ASAP to get it straightened out. Our experienced technicians can assess the valve and determine whether it needs to be replaced. And because we know life happens and you aren’t always going to catch a problem during business hours, we also offer 24/7 emergency service.

So, why should I care about anode rods?

So, why should I care about anode rods?

While it doesn’t get a lot of the attention like a dishwasher or refrigerator, the water heater just might be the biggest unsung hero of your home

Just think, without it you wouldn’t have hot water to shower, wash dishes, do the laundry, and so much more. And you know what keeps that unsung hero working? It’s the anode rod.

What is an anode rod?

To put it plainly, the anode rod is the most important factor in determining the life of your water heater. An anode rod is a steel core wire surrounded with one of three different metals. These metals could either be aluminum (best for hard water), magnesium (most common) or zinc (an upgrade from aluminum). The rod is screwed into the top of your water heater and protects your water heater from rusting. When the tank is filled with water the anode rod essentially sacrifices itself (dramatic, we know) to protect the exposed steel of the water heater, through a method called electrolysis. Electrolysis happens when there are two pieces of metal connected inside of water. This process makes the anode rod corrode in place of the exposed steel in your water heater.

Protecting the Tank

Steel is a very useful material, but it will eventually rust. It’s safe to assume that you already know water can and will cause metals to rust. Tank water heater manufacturers know this, too, which is why the tank has a few lines of defense in place.

The first is the glass coating inside the tank. In a new water heater, this lining will prevent water from even coming into contact with the steel of the tank. However, this lining will also start to crack over time. When that happens, the water within the tank can then go to work on the steel that it is composed of. That’s when the anode rod really comes into play.

The rod reacts to the corrosive elements in the water more readily than steel does, so it’s consumed by this material first. This means that your tank itself is protected from corrosion. Because the rod breaks down over time, it also means that it won’t last forever. Keeping a good rod in place is integral to the protection of your hot water tank. Once the tank begins to rust, replacement is your only option.

And this is why you should not only care, but you should celebrate the anode rod.

If you have any other questions about anode rods or water heaters, don’t give it another thought. Just call your local Louisville or Lexington Dauenhauer, any hour.

How to avoid water damage from an overflowing toilet

How to avoid water damage from an overflowing toilet

We’ve all shared that moment when we see the rising water inside the toilet.

We try to awaken any telekinesis ability we may have missed and force the water back down. If our superhuman side doesn’t appear, then we wait for that inevitable splash of water as it hits the bathroom floor. It’s an awful, frightening sound.

Then comes the panic. This is where we can offer some advice. The last thing you want is water damage. Just follow these tips, and we’ll get through this:

Turn off the water

When the water is overflowing, you need to stop the water. You can do this by shutting off the water supply line. You can find the water valve below the water tank. After overflowing stops, allow the toilet bowl to drain thoroughly.

Plunge away

Typically when a clog occurs, it will happen in either the toilet bowl or trap. Plungers are lifesavers for resolving the blocked clogs. Make sure you’re using the correct plunger for toilets. A common mistake is people will use a sink plunger, which will not form the proper seal for a toilet.

Snake it

So you tried to plunge but that didn’t pan out. Now it’s time to use the snake or auger. Both of them work closely. Toilet augers are designed specifically to crawl through your drainpipes and snag the clog. It works with the shape of the toilet and the s-shaped trap.

Clean things up

Time is precious when it comes to cleanup. The longer the water sits the more damage it will cause. Besides the obvious mess, water can be absorbed into the walls, thus letting the bacteria to grow. Consider using a dry/wet vacuum to suck up the standing water and waste. Go ahead and use towels and blankets to soak in the water. You can always wash those afterwards.

Dry things out

Once the waste and water is removed, make sure to use high-powered fans and air movers to dry out the damaged material from the backed up toilet. You can typically rent air movers from a local hardware store.

TP alternatives: Are they a good idea?

TP alternatives: Are they a good idea?

We all watched as toilet paper quickly started to disappear in our local grocery stores. It was followed by out-of-stock messages online.

So what happens when we can’t get our hands on anymore TP? Being a part of the plumbing industry, we’ve seen what people have been clogging their pipes with. And to say the least, the results have been cloggy. We’re going to share a substitute that can work out great for everyone, and some alternatives you definitely should not be flushing.

Do you have water? Is it safe? Then you have everything you need! That’s right, it’s time to talk bidets. If you’ve ever heard of a bidet, or experienced one for yourself, you know that it’s a type of toilet that provides a stream of water to clean yourself up after using the restroom. They’re also not a new fad. In fact, they’ve been around since the 1700s and are extremely common throughout Europe, Asia, and South America. After using one of these, you may decide to ditch toilet paper altogether! They’re really that good.

Don’t go there

Here’s where we cover the items that really have no business going down your toilet. Think before you flush!

Baby Wipes

We want to start with baby wipes because we know that these are a fan favorite even when toilet paper is in abundant supply. While baby wipes give you that luxurious feel, they’re terrible for your plumbing system.

Disinfectant Wipes

Disinfectant wipes fall under the same umbrella as baby wipes. The problem with wipes like this is that it can clog up and create a clog on their own or they can catch themselves on existing sludge in your plumbing system and create a clog. Either way, it’s bad news.

Paper Towels/ Napkins

Have you taken to wiping with cut up paper towels or napkins? We understand why you’d go down this path, but these thicker paper goods make your home vulnerable to clogs. It’s best to just step away from these as an option.

Looking to learn more about bidets, or ready to install one for your home? No problem. Simply call your Louisville or Lexington Dauenhauer, any hour.

Can indoor plants improve air quality?

Can indoor plants improve air quality?

Well, no. But yes. It’s complicated.

You see plants don’t purify indoor air. At least, not the way that a typical air purifier does, using filtration to remove gross stuff from the air. Research does show that plants have a limited ability to lower concentrations of certain gases and chemicals from indoor air. But just in really, really, really small quantities. To achieve the kind of indoor air quality you’d be looking for, you’d honestly have to have a rainforest in your home. And while that would be incredible, it’s highly unlikely.

So what do I do about my IAQ?

By all means, feel free to invest in a few more ferns. But here are some other ways you can improve your home’s air quality:

  • Invest in an air quality monitor

It helps to know what you can improve when you know exactly what you’re dealing with.

  • Use an air purifier

Everyone can breathe easier when you know you’re pumping pure, pollutant-free air directly into your personal space.

  • Limit activities that introduce chemicals into your indoor air
  • Use green-cleaning chemicals
  • Don’t burn wood inside

If you do, make sure to use a wood stove that has a filter.

  • Regularly ventilate your home or building after cooking or cleaning

So what did we learn? Using plants will do little to clean your indoor air, while changing your indoor habits can drastically improve your IAQ. With newer, energy-efficient homes and buildings circulating less fresh air, making informed, intelligent decisions about your indoor lifestyle is an increasingly important part of making sure you’re always breathing the cleanest possible air.

Need to improve your IAQ? Just call your local Louisville or Lexington Dauenhauer, any hour.
