What causes sewage to backup?

What causes sewage to backup?

The bad news:  backups happen.

The good news:  we can help tell you why backups happen, which in turn can help solve the problem. Let’s cover a few possibilities why your sewage is paying a return visit, shall we?

It’s a clog
Just like your drainpipes, your main sewer line can become clogged. No surprise there. And typically, this wouldn’t be a big deal, but in some cases, it can lead to a sewage backup. If it is just one toilet, sink or tub that seems to be giving you a problem, it may just be a clog in that drain. However, if every flush creates a sewage backup in your home, you likely have a blockage in your sewer line.

Broken or Collapsed Sewer Lines
Do you happen to have an older home? Then your sewer backup could be caused by broken, cracked or collapsed lines. Although plastic sewer lines have now become the norm, older homes were built using cast iron and clay piping that can break down over time and create sewer problems. Fortunately, there is plenty of technology today that can replace sewer pipes with a system that causes minimal disturbance in your yard or home. In fact, we’ve written a few articles about this!

Tree Roots Can Cause a Sewer Backup

Most sewer pipes lie just beneath the surface of your lawn. You know what else is on your lawn? – trees!  So, as your trees grow, their roots can unfortunately penetrate your sewer line, which ends up clogging it. That’s where we can help. With the use of sewer video inspection, we’ll be able to look directly into your pipes and find the problem.

I know what you’re thinking: wait, I don’t even have any trees on my lawn. Well, even though you may not have a tree near your sewer lines, tree roots can cross property boundaries and may be located far away from their source. If you have a sewer line that’s been infiltrated, the roots will need to be cut away and the pipe repaired or replaced.

Do you have a question about your sewer line? No problem. Simply call your Louisville or Lexington Dauenhauer, any hour.

Deep fried plumbing: A plumber’s take on turkey frying

Deep fried plumbing: A plumber’s take on turkey frying

Deep frying the Thanksgiving turkey is becoming more and more popular, which means more and more people are stuck with gallons of used oil with little idea of how to dispose of it.

We can help with that part, but first: We do not recommend deep frying a turkey without taking proper precautions, doing research and asking someone with experience for advice. When done properly, deep frying your turkey creates a tasty treat. When done wrong, such as dropping a frozen turkey into a vat of scorching oil, you get an incredibly dangerous and even deadly situation (simply search “frozen turkey in a deep fryer” on YouTube to see demonstrations by fire departments).

But let’s assume you deep fried your turkey, all went well and you now have a belly full of turkey and a deep fryer full of used oil. Believe it or not, this is the point where many people pour oil down the drain. It’s just liquid, right? Wrong! Oil in your drain pipes will solidify and wreak havoc on your home’s plumbing system and the city’s. FOG (fats, oils and grease) are common problems in causing sewage backups.

The only way to properly dispose of your oil is to drop it off at a collection point provided by your local government or other recyclers. Louisville has several drop points provided by the city, and Lexington has several options for commercial drop offs. Many of these sites will convert oil into bio diesel.

Review this handy list of other great (and tasty) tips for deep frying your turkey. Just remember to properly thaw out your turkey, and to never put oil down the drain and you’ll be doing just fine.

Drain Cleaners. The Good, the Bad and the Just Don’t.

Drain Cleaners. The Good, the Bad and the Just Don’t.

We’ve all been there. Staring at a clogged sink drain, wishing we could just handle it ourselves.

And more often than not, we end up using a chemical drain cleaner to take care of things. As we said, we’ve all been there. But at Dauenhauer, it’s our professional opinion that you stop that train of thought. Here’s why:

Don’t Use Chemical Drain Cleaners

We know you’re probably thinking we’re just saying this so you’ll call us. Well, of course, we’d like to hear from you, but there really is some legitimate rationale to our suggestion. Chemical drain cleaners clear a drain by dissolving the clog using caustic or oxidizing chemicals. These chemicals create a reaction to break down and loosen the clog.

But according to ConsumerReports.Org, most chemical drain cleaners are more trouble than they’re worth. Some react with aluminum and give off unhealthy gas, can solidify inside the pipes and can’t be removed, or mix with other household cleaners and cause the mixture to burst out of the drain. Liquid, foam and gel cleaners can also cause damage to pipes, and usually, aren’t as effective taking at least 30 minutes to eat through a clog.

And this is when the drain cleaner works. If the clog isn’t removed, now you have chemicals just sitting there, eating away at your pipes.

Do use a snake or plunger

The safest course of action is to use a snake or a plunger. But we advise, don’t use either of these methods if you’ve already tried a chemical drain cleaner. You could run the risk of splashing chemicals up onto your face or skin. If you have a clog that isn’t going anywhere, it may be time to call the most reliable plumber in Lexington. And that would be Dauenhauer.

If you have any questions or if you need help call Dauenhauer, any hour.

A brick in your toilet could be building a wall in your pipes

A brick in your toilet could be building a wall in your pipes

Being frugal and crafty didn’t just happen when Pinterest came around. People have long found ways to save money with do-it-yourself projects.

An example of this is the old practice of placing a brick in your toilet’s tank to save water. The brick displaces the water, taking less to fill the tank and therefore saving a little water on each flush.

While this practice has been around for decades, it’s time to ditch the brick. It can cost you more in the long run. Bricks will deteriorate as the water rushes in and out of the toilet, and where do you think all of that debris is going? Right down your pipes.

If your toilets are over 20 years old, your water consumption is beyond the brick trick’s help anyways. It’s time to upgrade because you’re likely using double the amount of water than what’s necessary, so even a cinder block wouldn’t help you.

If you insist on this method for saving a few bucks, you have a few other options. You can pick up a tank bag, which hangs off the side of your tank. Or you can swap out the brick for a water bottle. Fill a water bottle with rocks, then add water. Seal the bottle and place it in your tank on the opposite side of the handle components. This will displace some water, allow your toilet to flush just fine and will not put debris into your pipes. Beyond any displacement effort, you can replace your flapper. These deteriorate and are the cause of most wastefulness with toilets.

If you have one of the high efficiency toilets, we don’t recommend any of these displacement methods, as your toilet is already designed to operate with a low level of water.

Our best advice is that if you’re interested in saving on your water bill, install a high efficiency toilet or replace the valves and flapper regularly. Your toilet accounts for about 30 percent of your home’s water bill, so changing your most-used toilets out can make a big difference. Contact us or call for a free quote.
