When is it time to replace your furnace?

When is it time to replace your furnace?

In every home’s life, someday there will be a time when you have time to bid farewell to a super warm friend – your furnace.

Before you start to get sad, let’s talk about how long a traditional furnace lasts. For most common furnaces, anywhere from 15 to 30 years is the norm. But in our experience, we believe once you hit the 15-year mark its time to start looking.

So you might be wondering, so how do I keep my furnace healthy and in shape. Well for starters, the type of fuel it uses is a big deal. Many homeowners choose to install a new electric furnace because they boast a long average lifespan of 20 – 30 years. On the other hand, a gas furnace is engineered with a lifespan of 15 – 20 years. Although new gas furnaces have a lower lifespan, they cost less money to operate when compared to new electric furnaces. In addition, gas furnaces are able to heat your home at a faster rate when compared to electric systems.

Some other tips that’ll keep your furnace in good spirits are continuously replacing dirty filters in your furnace, seal the windows and doors in your home and consider investing in a programmable thermostat.

What’s That Sound?

When your furnace is on its last legs, it will let you know. In fact, the noises your furnace makes can tell you a lot. Let’s go over some of the most common furnace noises and what they mean.

Popping

This is caused by fluctuations in temperature within your furnace.

Rattling

A rattling sound may be caused by loose ducts or equipment.

Screeching

This type of noise indicates a damaged furnace blower motor. However, it can also be caused by a damaged belt or pulley.

Humming

This is caused by the furnace’s blower motor. If it has become noticeably loud, then it’s time to invest in a new furnace.

Clicking

This may be a sign of a problem with the flame sensor or an ignition issue.

Booming

This could be a severe gas emission issue with your furnace. This noise is often caused by a brief delay during the ignition process.

What causes sewage to backup?

What causes sewage to backup?

The bad news:  backups happen.

The good news:  we can help tell you why backups happen, which in turn can help solve the problem. Let’s cover a few possibilities why your sewage is paying a return visit, shall we?

It’s a clog
Just like your drainpipes, your main sewer line can become clogged. No surprise there. And typically, this wouldn’t be a big deal, but in some cases, it can lead to a sewage backup. If it is just one toilet, sink or tub that seems to be giving you a problem, it may just be a clog in that drain. However, if every flush creates a sewage backup in your home, you likely have a blockage in your sewer line.

Broken or Collapsed Sewer Lines
Do you happen to have an older home? Then your sewer backup could be caused by broken, cracked or collapsed lines. Although plastic sewer lines have now become the norm, older homes were built using cast iron and clay piping that can break down over time and create sewer problems. Fortunately, there is plenty of technology today that can replace sewer pipes with a system that causes minimal disturbance in your yard or home. In fact, we’ve written a few articles about this!

Tree Roots Can Cause a Sewer Backup

Most sewer pipes lie just beneath the surface of your lawn. You know what else is on your lawn? – trees!  So, as your trees grow, their roots can unfortunately penetrate your sewer line, which ends up clogging it. That’s where we can help. With the use of sewer video inspection, we’ll be able to look directly into your pipes and find the problem.

I know what you’re thinking: wait, I don’t even have any trees on my lawn. Well, even though you may not have a tree near your sewer lines, tree roots can cross property boundaries and may be located far away from their source. If you have a sewer line that’s been infiltrated, the roots will need to be cut away and the pipe repaired or replaced.

Do you have a question about your sewer line? No problem. Simply call your Louisville or Lexington Dauenhauer, any hour.

Why you should get your kitchen drain cleaned

Why you should get your kitchen drain cleaned

Getting your drains cleaned is just one of those things that is easy to put off.

If it’s not broke, why clean it, right? Well, wrong, actually. Your kitchen sink not only is used and abused daily, but it also has the responsibility of trying to handle cooking oils, grease and the occasional leftovers no one wants. When you look at it this way, it only makes sense that we show the kitchen drain a little more respect.

While we’re on the topic of respect, let’s shift gears to the most disrespectful way to care for your sink drain – chemical cleaners. We’re sure this isn’t the first time you’re reading this, but we’re ok with repeating the message. Please, don’t use chemical cleaners. Absolutely no professional recommends them. All they do is eat the clog. And then they eat your pipe. Please, just don’t.

Now that we’ve covered chemicals, let’s talk snakes. Hand-crank drain snakes are great for quick unclogging jobs for bathroom sinks. And while we’re at it, they’re also good at removing hair from drains. Where drain snakes slither a little short is that they don’t provide any cleaning. They’re only a way to break through a clog to allow water to flow again. The debris that created the clog in the first place will stay there, helping to start the buildup all over again.

Think about all the things that go into a kitchen drain (we talked about this earlier). Fats, oils and grease. They’re a completely different type of grime, which means they require a different type of cleaning method. AKA, call the professionals.

What you can expect from the best professional plumbers for kitchen drain cleaning is a hydro-jetter. What these bad boys do is blast high-pressure water from a nozzle down in the drainpipe. The water force scours the interior of the pipe in all directions, removing any buildup from the pipe. After hydro-jetting, your kitchen sink drain will be in “like-new” condition, and you won’t have to worry about buildup for a long time to come.

Looking for a few more answers to your kitchen drain questions? No problem. Simply call your Louisville or Lexington Dauenhauer, any hour.
