Plumbing Tips For Holiday Parties
Nobody dreads holiday parties more than your plumbing. While many people are focused on cleaning their house and getting the decorations just right, it’s often the plumbing that goes unnoticed – until it’s too late.
Here are a few helpful tips to avoid unfortunate plumbing problems during this year’s party:
Provide Multiple Bathrooms to Guests
If at all possible, make more than one bathroom available for your guests. This will alleviate the stress on one bathroom and will also make things more convenient and comfortable for everyone in attendance.
Keep a Trash Can Nearby
Having a small vanity trash can near the toilet area will rid the temptation of guests to flush unwanted products down your toilet. You may even want to place a decorative sign on the toilet or trash can to instruct guests on what to do (or what not to do) with items such as napkins, paper towels, cocktail straws, baby wipes, diapers, and feminine products.
Keep a Plunger Nearby
Make sure to keep a plunger next to the toilet that can be used in the event of an emergency. When a toilet overflow does occur, flooding can spread very quickly and the toilet will need to be plunged and unclogged as soon as possible. Keeping a plunger visible and in the immediate area will save valuable time.
Grease is the Villain
If you plan on deep-frying a turkey this year or cooking up some bacon, the grease should never end up down your drain. Once the grease hits your drain and cools, it will instantly begin to clog up your drain and possibly ruin your disposal.
These small screens stop unwanted particles from going down your drain. If you’re cooking in the kitchen, put a mesh screen in your sink and empty it once food particles get stuck.
Your Disposal Isn’t All Powerful
Your disposal is best used to discard small particles that end up down your drain, not all of your scraps from dinner prep or the meal itself. We advise you to throw these items in the trash can and NOT the garbage disposal:
Coffee grounds, meat, poultry, fish bones, egg shells, pasta, rice, breads, potatoes, apple peels, carrots, celery, asparagus, etc.
