How to Handle Invasive Tree Roots

How to Handle Invasive Tree Roots

You may not notice them, but tree roots can grow to be very large and very powerful.

In fact, there are types of trees in Kentucky that are known to seek out underground plumbing pipes and destroy them. This of course takes time, but they can do a lot of damage, and replacing an underground pipe that’s been overtaken by an invasive root can be very expensive.

If you have a tree that you suspect will send its roots into a pipe, it’s important to take action before it’s too late. You can buy special chemicals that will stun a root structure so it doesn’t continue growing into the pipe. The chemicals are placed in the soil to create a poisonous zone around the pipe that the roots will not go through. Any roots that do approach the chemical zone will be stunned from the chemicals and never make it into the pipe.

If you discover the problem too late and the roots have already infiltrated the pipe, you might need to hire someone with a mechanical auger to come clear the roots out. A mechanical auger has a rotating spiral head that, when sent down the pipe, will cut the roots. While the auger will remove the roots from the pipe, it does nothing to prevent them from coming back. You will need to either remove the tree or use a chemical in the soil as previously mentioned.

If a pipe or sewer has been damaged too badly from tree roots, it’s possible that it is beyond repair. In this case, part of the line must be replaced. If you suspect pipes around your Louisville or Lexington home are being damaged by surrounding trees, call Dauenhauer Plumbing and we will inspect the pipe for damage and recommend what actions you should take.
