Sump pumps: Do you need one? Do you have one?
As the wet spring weather leads to wet, flooded basements for some people here in Louisville and Lexington Kentucky, the subject of sump pumps is sure to come up.
In case you’re not familiar with them, a sump pump removes water from a reservoir in your basement. Usually, water follows perimeter drains around the outside of your basement waterproofing system into the basement. It may also come into your basement via rain or groundwater, particularly if your basement is built below the local water table level.
Sump pumps are designed to pump water away from your basement and foundation. In older homes, it may pump the water to sewer lines. This puts a strain on the sewer system during wet periods like we’re having now, so that configuration is no longer compliant with our local codes.
